BEFORE THE NAILS

Oh, what a sinner am I, no claim to anything even remotely righteous

My tongue seeks only to hurt, my mind wandering in utter darkness

Craving the world’s acceptance and accolades, the fullness of pride

No time to meet another’s needs, grabbing all that my heart desires

Everywhere I turn there is envy and greed, this the mirror’s reflection

Completely lost, fearing the dire consequences of the truth’s conviction

So I have run out of hope, there is no light for me where the tunnel ends

Oh, if I could only climb out of sin’s abyss and make necessary amends

But there is only One who was born for such a time as this and for me

How can it be that from the very beginning He knew what I would be

Against this merciful power, holy and righteous, evil cannot prevail

For by His love He knew my sinful heart before the cross, before the nails

Now I am set free!

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:6-8 NASB

I have been writing poetry since I was a teenager, but it wasn’t until a few of years ago that my writing became more spiritual and at the same time more prolific. As I shared my poetry with my wife, Hannah, and a few good friends, they encouraged me to place the poems in book form. My first book endeavor was “Because Of Him”, published in 2017. After hearing Sammy Murimi, the director of Share International Inc., speak at our church, I decided that the proceeds from that book would be donated to Share. In 2018, Hannah and I were privileged to go to Turkanaland in Kenya on a mission trip with Share. It was a life-changing experience for us both. Some of the inspiration from that trip is expressed in my second book, “His Cup Pours Out”. I include scripture verses with my poems because most of the poems I have written were inspired by reading God’s Word. I hope that as you visit this blog, you will meditate on the scripture verses and write down your prayers and thoughts for the week. My goal for this project has always been that God would be glorified! Robert M Hinnen
