BEFORE MARY’S ARMS

I was thinking about the busyness of Christmas

How some might feel left out because of their past

Others of us missing loved ones no longer here

Wondering if there isn’t more or if anyone cares

Then I had this thought about Joseph a carpenter by trade

A man of God traveling with the love of his life by his side

What if Mary with child became ill or delivered on the way

What if they reached Bethlehem and there was no place to stay

Was he thinking how his life would soon be forever changed

Knowing she was carrying a son, not his, but the Messiah

The promised Son of God for the salvation of the world

Did he wonder if he could love this child like his very own

Remembering what the angel of the Lord in a dream had spoken to him

“You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins”

“And she gave birth to her firstborn son… and laid him in a manger”

But perhaps the babe felt first the strong, loved-filled arms of a carpenter

Obedient to God’s Word from the very start, trusting in Him without any doubt

Joseph, son of David, an adopted father, reminds us what Christmas is truly about

Christ our Savior is born!

“And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.”

I have been writing poetry since I was a teenager, but it wasn’t until a few of years ago that my writing became more spiritual and at the same time more prolific. As I shared my poetry with my wife, Hannah, and a few good friends, they encouraged me to place the poems in book form. My first book endeavor was “Because Of Him”, published in 2017. After hearing Sammy Murimi, the director of Share International Inc., speak at our church, I decided that the proceeds from that book would be donated to Share. In 2018, Hannah and I were privileged to go to Turkanaland in Kenya on a mission trip with Share. It was a life-changing experience for us both. Some of the inspiration from that trip is expressed in my second book, “His Cup Pours Out”. I include scripture verses with my poems because most of the poems I have written were inspired by reading God’s Word. I hope that as you visit this blog, you will meditate on the scripture verses and write down your prayers and thoughts for the week. My goal for this project has always been that God would be glorified! Robert M Hinnen
